My Prayer As We Head To The Polls

Father God you are the God of all creation. You have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and your outstretched arm. And America, like all nations is like merely a drop from a bucket to you. There is no authority except from you and government exists because you established it. Yet, we have gone our own way and continue to look not to you but to our political party, people and programs to do only what you can do – and that is to show us the path to wisdom, righteousness and true governance.

Even though many of us who claim Jesus as Lord and Savior know you as God, we continue to fail to honor you as God choosing instead to honor more our allegiance to a party platform or person. And in our futile pursuit of acceptance by the world, our hearts continue to grow darker, our wisdom weaker and our light dimmer. Professing to be wise we have become fools.

Forgive us for choosing wrong over right and  for allowing ourselves to be wooed by the world and its ways. In all of our ways and when casting our vote, give us discernment. May we not be swayed by the popularity of any candidate, but by their fruit. Jesus told us to beware of false prophets who come to us in sheep’s clothing who inwardly are ravenous wolves. Give your people dear God this day discernment. Let us not be carried away by empty rhetoric, slick advertisements and false promises… but let us instead be persuaded by each man and woman’s fruit. A good tree cannot produce bad fruit, nor can a bad tree produce good. Help us to stop long enough to examine their fruit.

You have made us salt and light. Forgive us for where we have chosen to blend in with the world rather than bring flavor to it and have chosen to hide our light rather than shine for you. Our country and communities are decaying and we are in desperate need of men and women who are unafraid and unashamed to stand out and stand up for you. Thank you for such whom you have called to serve and may you show them today great favor. Strengthen and protect them and as fellow brothers and sisters, may we have the courage to support them – even if it means leaving behind party loyalty. Our loyalty should belong to you and those whom you have called.

Help us Father for without you we are lost. To the only wise God, give victory to your people today and above all, may you be glorified. In the name that is above every name – in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ we pray.  Amen.
