They're Not Supposed to Like You

I counsel mostly leaders; strong men and women of faith who share a common struggle – the overwhelming importance they place on who likes them and who doesn’t.

If an elected leader certainly the degree of a successful election or re-election campaign hinges on the likes of the voters.

Even that being true, God never calls or asks anyone He calls to make it a point to be “liked.” In fact the opposite is true.

Jesus guarantees if we follow Him, not only will we not be liked – but hated (Matthew 10:22).

This is especially true in today’s politically-charged culture, particularly for public leaders of faith.

Some people will not like you. That's just the way it is. But live and serve in such a way that they can’t help but respect you. Even more, live and serve in such a way that is pleasing to God. He will handle the people.

All of life is cyclical. Power is fleeting. People are temporary. Don’t base your worth or the worth of your work on the temporary likes of temporary people.

As long as God loves you, who doesn't like you won't much matter. God will cause even your enemy to be at peace with you and will cause people who may not care for you, to take care of a need for you. They won't even be able to explain why they did it!

Allow me to let you in on a secret. They will never tell you but your worst enemy, the one who hates you most, criticizes you most, tears you down most; is the very one who most wish they could be like you.

All of life is cyclical. Power is fleeting. People are temporary. Don’t base your worth or the worth of your work on the temporary likes of temporary people.

My experience has been in a lot of cases it's not a matter of them not liking you as much as it is them envying you. You are what they wish they could be and deep-down believe they never can be.

As a public servant leader of faith when you stand on Truth and do what is right based upon Truth in a world of lies and deceit, there always will be those who won’t like you. Always. They’re not supposed to because how can two walk together unless they agree and when your light cancels their darkness?

As for you, just look at them and smile because without them even realizing it they are a testimony to the truth of God’s word.

Don’t worry when the wrong people don’t like you, worry when they do!

If elected, don't worry. Don't panic. God will see to it that you win every race He has pre-destined for you to win. The odds are stacked in your favor. He will move every obstacle, put down every opponent and give you the winning strategy, regardless of who likes you or who doesn't.

As long as God loves you who doesn't like you is irrelevant. And a big thumbs up to that!
