I end my personal letters, notes with three words... three words I live my life by. "Keep moving forward!"
Why? Because the two things that keep people up at night, paralyze us and depress us most are fear and regret. Fear of moving forward and regret over so many things behind us. Either and both stop us dead in our tracks.
Fearful we won't have the resources, the help, the advantages, the support to move forward. Fearful of what people will say or think. Fearful we don't have what it takes. Fearful of the what-ifs so we don't.
Regret. We spend so much time looking back at what we did wrong. What we long to change if we could turn back time. We grieve over the "if onlies" and "what ifs." If only I hadn't done that, said that... I wish I had done this instead of that.
The thing about the what-ifs and what onlies? Sometimes we will try to re-create the "un-recreatable."
The worst? If we look back long enough, we will go back. Only to find it not the same and that we can't fix the past.
Life is that way. I lived with so many regrets. Regrets that would rob my sleep and steal my joy until I learned these simple yet life-changing words from God to Moses in Exodus 14:15-16 and took them to heart.
The Lord said to Moses, “Why do you cry to me? Tell the people of Israel to go forward. Lift up your staff, and stretch out your hand over the sea and divide it, that the people of Israel may go through the sea on dry land." (ESV)
If they had kept standing still...too afraid to move forward and frozen in their tracks by looking back, they would have missed their long-awaited blessing. So will we.
God told Moses exactly what he needed to do and He is the same God yesterday, today and forever... thus He is telling those of us paralyzed by fear and regret the same.
The Lord said to Moses, “Why do you cry to me? Tell the people of Israel to go forward..."
Don't let fear (your Red Sea) and regret (your Egypt) stop you... God has already made a way.
