Not a criticism, just a fact. America is 243 years old. We have been at peace (i.e.,not at war) for only 17 out of our 243 years.
IF we want to compare America with Israel, though a stretch by many - but for the sake of argument for those Christians who insist on going there --- the only time throughout its history that Israel was at war was when it was under judgment for disobedience. Disobedience. Followed by repentance. Followed by long stretches of peace. Did you get the order? Disobedience. War. Repentance. Peace.
For all the flag-waving and God-invoking, and as Christian and as patriotic as I am... If a country that claims Jehovah God as its God is at war for over 90% of its existence, something is amiss. What is amiss? There has never been any repentance. Without repentance, there is no relenting of war and can be no peace. And will not be any peace.
For Israel it was the priests, for America it would be the leaders of the church. But these were long co-opted by power and politics and have gotten progressively intertwined over our 243-year history until the Christian Coalition and Jerry Falwell's Moral Majority in the 1980s cemented the religious right with the political right.
They had the resources but not repentance. They now had the positions, but not the power because true power comes only from the Holy Spirit (i.e., God) and God does not bless disobedience without repentance. So we have what we have. And lest you be fooled, don't mistake economic prosperity as indications of God's blessing. Many atheists are prosperous. The blood of generations cries from the ground of America.
America in all of its prowess without repentance will never be at peace. Never. It will always be at war. And someday the war may be waged not on foreign soil but in our towns and cities. So once you understand biblically and historically the deal, you won't involve yourself with silly social media spats over what Trump has done or will do - or what Iran will do.
Those of us who know, know how this is going to end and whom in the end wins. But until then, and for those of us who get it, watch, fight and pray... and may the peace of God be with you.
