When They Envy Your Success

And David had success in all his undertakings, for the LORD was with him. And when Saul saw that he had great success, he stood in fearful awe of him. But all of Israel and Judah loved David, for he went out and came in before them.   1 Samuel 18:14-16

After every public victory there will be private envy.

Don’t think for one moment that just because you’re the head, the tail will wag when you win. It won’t. They won’t.

David did the job Saul as King was too afraid to do – go after Goliath. After slaying Goliath, David led the charge against the opposing army.

It isn't that David tried to make Saul look bad. He didn’t. He saw a job that needed to be done.

Saul and his men, though empowered and positioned by God, were too afraid to act on behalf of God and the people of Israel. David wasn't. The people loved him for it. Saul envied and increasingly hated him not only for the victory over Goliath, but because of David's ensuing victories, popularity, character and charisma.

All of which, David readily acknowledged were because of God. Saul even envied the favor of God upon David.

Where Saul and his men saw enormous opposition, David saw enormous opportunity.

David trusted God and didn't seek or wait for anyone's approval.

God rewarded him with an amazing and legendary victory. And God kept rewarding him.

The more God rewarded David, the more envious and angry Saul became.

While colleagues, peers and others may envy your success, don't focus on them. Focus on God, those whom you serve and upon whose behalf you work.

Though they may not have the platform, position or influence as others, they will have your back. And when time comes, will put in sweat equity for you.

If David had allowed Saul’s jealousy, envy and plots to deter him, he never would have become king.

As a public servant leader, there always will be someone out to get you – especially when you win. If you let that stop you, you will never reach your full and God-ordained purpose.

There will always be someone who is envious and will stir up others to bring false charges against you, slander you, ruin your name and reputation; and, do any and everything they can to bring you down.

How should you respond? As David responded. With a closed mouth and moving feet.

Keep moving forward in what God has given you to do and trust Him for increase and victory.

God in turn will keep on blessing you and there won’t be a thing those that envy you can do; but as Saul and his men did, have a ringside seat and watch!
